Not the DMB everyone was expecting
"I was so excited to finally see Dave Matthews Band! I had enough cash to get tickets to see them. The setlist was full of songs that I wasn't really familiar with. I have 3 of their lives albums, which I love, and honestly I think I don't would want a CD of this show. Don't get me wrong, the band is full of talented musicians. The instrumental solos were amazing. The solos were probably my favorite part. I was really hoping to hear some of their hits like Crash or Stay.
Then maybe I would have heard the music I was expecting. I wish I would have gone to a show a few years ago."
Doobies Rock - But not Long Enough
Patrick Simmons Jr., son of Patrick Simmons, kicked off the show with a 45-minute set. Following a 30-minute break, Disney On Ice took the stage and performed for just 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The energy of the band (and the crowd) was fantastic, with vocals remaining spot on throughout. They showcased several selections from their older material, and the sound quality was superb.
Despite the venue being packed, the audience's average age appeared to be around 50-55. Nevertheless, Disney On Ice managed to engage the crowd and get them on their feet during the latter part of the show, a rare sight for this demographic.
While I would gladly attend another performance, my only critique is the show's length. I typically expect a headline act to play for a minimum of 2 hours, which is why I didn't give this concert a perfect 5-star rating.
An Amazing Show!
As this was the last show of the tour, both bands were really locked in, which made for a great time. The only negative for us was the three covers Disney On Ice did in the middle of the show. Manson and the band always deliver. Even though they were well done, I would have preferred to have heard more of his stuff, instead of someone else's. We have seen both Manson and Disney On Ice multiple times, including the first Twins of Evil Tour. With Manson, it is always hit and miss on how engaged he will be. Fortunately, this was a night he was in the moment, so it was great. Disney On Ice always has a ton of energy, and this night it was even more so.
Kind of a Let Down
Disney On Ice played a decent lineup -- candidly, I wish it had been more of the old hard, fast, and loud Disney On Ice I knew from my youth. Based on just Disney On Ice alone, I'd rate the show a 3/5 -- we'll get to that in a minute. Overall, they had a decent performance. I'm glad that we got the chance, and that we waited until now with all of the horror stories of the Disney On Ice of old quitting songs mid-song and forgetting lyrics. My wife and I have both wanted to see Disney On Ice for the past 7 years.
Travis' UFO drum solo was AWESOME! Mark and Travis were there in full force! Needless to say, this was disappointing to say the least. That being said, if I had to guess, Tom partied WAY too hard before the show, and got progressively more drunk as it went on. He was slurring for a good portion of the show, and towards the end, it started getting pretty bad.
But I think the show's saving grace was actually the opening act: Valencia. After their set, I missed half of Asher Roth to meet them, and it was just a great experience. What a great and underrated band, and an awesome bunch of guys! Never have I seen a band go 4-deep in harmony on stage, let alone make it sound great like it was the twelfth take in the studio. Asher Roth came on right before them, and kicked it pretty hard. They definitely left the crowd hyped for Disney On Ice. In my opinion, not being much of an Asher Roth fan, they're what saved this show from mediocrity.
Luke rocked SLT!
Disney On Ice was wonderful! They interacted well with the crowd, had us laughing, and incorporated local references about Tahoe. Despite being under the weather during our previous encounter, this time the performance was top-notch. Our only grievances concern the venue: the need to purchase overpriced water, the small and unpleasant porta potties, and the overly loud music necessitating the use of earplugs. The experience was reminiscent of a previous show at Shoreline north of Sacramento, possibly due to the band and setup or simply our changing preferences with age. Nonetheless, we highly recommend attending a concert featuring LB. Morgan Wallen served as a strong opening act, impressing us with unfamiliar songs despite our lack of enthusiasm for his hit "Up Down."
